Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

CEAS supports the study of less commonly taught languages and related area studies courses through the FLAS Fellowship Program, which is funded by a grant from the United States Department of Education. 

FLAS Fellowships are awards for students concentrating in modern foreign language and international or area studies.  CEAS administers FLAS awards for University of Chicago graduate students to study Chinese, Japanese and Korean

The FLAS program provides funding for 1) ACADEMIC YEAR study on the University of Chicago campus and 2) SUMMER study on the University of Chicago campus or elsewhere (domestic or abroad).

The 2019-2020 FLAS Fellowship competition will open in early December 2018.

 The application DEADLINE for INCOMING University of Chicago graduate students is Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 11:59 PM CST. The application DEADLINE for CURRENT University of Chicago graduate students is Monday, February 11, 2019 at 11:59 PM CST.
