Chinese Studies Funding Opportunities

Chinese Studies Dissertation Writing Fellowship

Description: This fellowship provides funds for a year of dissertation writing on a topic relating to Chinese studies. Research for the dissertation must be completed, and priority is given to those who have a chapter or two completed. In order to be eligible, the applicant must have applied for and achieved PhD candidacy by June 15th of 2011. Students who have been admitted to candidacy may apply in the spring for funding that will begin the following autumn.

Terms: This grant provides $18,000 plus fees over the course of one academic year. A student can receive only one Chinese Studies dissertation writing fellowship from the Center, and it is the final funding that a student can receive from the Center.

Chinese Studies Pre-dissertation Research Grant

Description: The award takes the form of a reimbursement for up to $3,000 worth of expenses and supports pre-dissertation research in Chinese Studies. The funds are intended to enable University of Chicago graduate students to lay the foundations for their research plans - for example, to survey holdings in archives, to identify and meet with scholars or other advisers with whom a student plans to work in Asia. Typically, funds are used to finance summer research in the target country. NOTE: A student can hold this grant only once during his/her graduate school career.

Conference Travel Grant: Chinese Studies

Open to: University of Chicago students traveling to present papers at conferences

Description: This grant provides modest support for students traveling outside the Chicago metropolitan area to present a paper on a topic relating to Chinese studies. The grant takes the form of reimbursement for up to $300 worth of expenses. A limited number of grants are also available for international conference travel in the amount of up to $400. 

To Apply: send an email to the Chair of the Chinese Studies Committee, with the following information: name and date of the conference, title of the paper you are presenting, and a budget listing expenses. An e-mail endorsement from the applicant’s primary faculty adviser must also be submitted. The Center (eastasia@uchicago.edu) should be included in the CC field on these emails.

 

Conference Travel Grant: Confucius Institute at the University of Chicago

Description: The Confucius Institute at the University of Chicago (CIUC) offers a Conference Travel Grant for University of Chicago faculty (up to $1000) and graduate students (up to $500) who will travel outside of Chicago to present a paper on a topic related to China before June 30, 2012.
