Exchange Programs

Rikkyo University

The University of Chicago and Rikkyo University have an exchange partnership that permits up to two students per academic year to apply for student status at each university.  Students wishing to participate in the exchange program must be accepted by Rikkyo University.  Graduate students are encouraged to apply for the Monbukagakusho Scholarship.  For information on the requirements and restrictions of the program, please click here.

If you are interested in applying for Spring 2017, PLEASE NOTIFY CEAS by Friday, October 21, 2016 and provide a cover letter, CV, and a copy of your unofficial transcript.

For AY 2017-2018, PLEASE NOTIFY CEAS by Friday, February 24, 2017, and provide a cover letter, CV, and a copy of your unofficial transcript.

CEAS will review all submitted materials and then nominate one student to 1) complete an online application through Rikkyo University; 2) download and print out the "Application Form" and all other required supporting documents from the online application system; and 3) provide the complete set to CEAS prior to the deadlines listed below.

  • November 4, 2016 is the DEADLINE for submitting Spring 2017 application materials to CEAS.
  • March 17, 2017 is the DEADLINE for submitting Fall 2017 application materials to CEAS.

Monbukagakusho Scholarship to Rikkyo University

Important Dates: Applications must be submitted by email to CEAS for the Monbukagakusho scholarship. We are expecting the deadling for applications to be early in the Winter quarter. Notifications are typically made in May.
Description: This program exempts government-sponsored international students from tuition fees and supplies them with a monthly scholarship stipend for travel expenses and other costs. The scholarship consists of a monthly stipend; waived tuition to Rikkyo University; and economy-class round-trip airfare to Japan. This scholarship is intended for long-term study at Rikkyo University (18 months). NOTE: If the government scholarship is not granted, the applicant will be accountable for the full tuition to participate in the Exchange Student Program at Rikkyo University. Interested students should read the 2014 program guidelines and contact the Center for East Asian Studies if you would like to apply.


Waseda University

The University of Chicago and Waseda University have an exchange partnership that permits one graduate student per academic year to apply for student status at each university.  Students wishing to participate in the exchange program must be accepted by Waseda University.  For information on the requirements and restrictions of the programs, please click here.

Graduate students interested in applying for Spring 2018, PLEASE NOTIFY CEAS by Friday, October 20, 2018 and provide a cover letter, CV, a letter of recommendation from one of your professors, and a copy of your unofficial transcript.  CEAS will then review the materials and advise students on the next steps of the application.

For AY 2018-2019, PLEASE NOTIFY CEAS by Friday, January 26, 2018 and provide a cover letter, CV, a letter of recommendation from one of your professors, and a copy of your unofficial transcript. CEAS will then review the materials and advise students on the next steps of the application.
