Rikkyo University Exchange Partnership

The University of Chicago and Rikkyo University have an exchange partnership that permits up to two students per academic year to apply for student status. Students wishing to participate in the exchange program must be accepted by Rikkyo University. For information on the requirements and restrictions of the program, please click HEREGraduate students are encouraged to apply for the Japanese Government (MEXT) in Research Scholarship.  

If you are interested in applying for Spring 2022, PLEASE NOTIFY CEAS by Friday, October 15, 2021. Please provide a cover letter, CV, and a copy of your unofficial transcript.

If you are interested in applying for Fall 2022 OR AY 2022-2023, PLEASE NOTIFY CEAS by Tuesday, March 1, 2022. Please provide a cover letter, CV, and a copy of your unofficial transcript.

CEAS will review all submitted materials and then nominate students to 1) complete an online application through Rikkyo University; 2) download and print out the "Application Form" and all other required supporting documents from the online application system; and 3) provide the complete set to CEAS prior to the deadlines listed below.

  • Friday, October 29, 2021 is the DEADLINE for submitting Spring 2022 application materials to CEAS.
  • Friday, March 11, 2022 is the DEADLINE for submitting Fall 2022 AND/OR AY 2022-2023 application materials to CEAS.

Waseda University Exchange Partnership

The University of Chicago and Waseda University have an exchange partnership that permits one graduate student per academic year to apply for student status. Students wishing to participate in the exchange program must be accepted by Waseda University. Graduate students interested in applying for Spring 2022, PLEASE NOTIFY CEAS by Friday, October 15, 2021. Please provide a cover letter, CV, a letter of recommendation from one of your professors, and a copy of your unofficial transcript. CEAS will then review the materials and advise students on the next steps of the application.

Japanese Government (MEXT) in Research Scholarship 

Eligibility: University of Chicago Graduate Students, up to 34 years of age
Sponsored by: Rikkyo University OR Waseda University

Important Dates: Applications must be submitted by email to CEAS for the Japanese Government (MEXT) in Research Scholarship. Applications are typically due in June, and for those who proceed to the next stage will be required to have an interview at the end of June. Final decisions are announced in January or February.   
Description: This program exempts government-sponsored international students from tuition fees and supplies them with a monthly scholarship stipend for travel expenses and other costs. The scholarship consists of a monthly stipend; waived tuition to Rikkyo University or Waseda University; and economy-class round-trip airfare to Japan. This scholarship is intended for long-term study (18 months). NOTE: If the government scholarship is not granted, the applicant will be accountable for the full tuition to participate in the Exchange Student Program at Rikkyo University or Waseda University. Interested students should read the 2022 program guidelines and the FAQs regarding the application process.
