#CEASStudentHighlights: Following the Journey of Students Abroad (2018-19)

Each year, the Center for East Asian Studies supports University of Chicago students through a variety of grants and fellowships, including Foreign Language Acquisition Grants (FLAG), Pre-Dissertation Research Grants, Dissertation Fellowships, and Professional Training Grants.

As students embark upon summer and academic year research and/or language study in China, Japan and Korea, we follow them on their journey and catch a glimpse of their work through shared stories and pictures.

UChicago Center for East Asian Studies Awarded Over $2.1 Million in Grants from U.S. Department of Education

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded over $2.1 million to the University of Chicago Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) for the period of 2018 to 2022.

CEAS is a recipient of grants from Title VI of the Higher Education Act, International Education Programs, and has been designated a National Resource Center (NRC) and will administer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships to support the advanced study of modern, less commonly taught languages (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) and international and area studies related to East Asia.

EALC's Emily Jungmin Yoon Publishes Collection of Poems Exploring Gender, Race, and Violence

East Asian Languages and Civilizations Ph.D. student, Emily Jungmin Yoon, debuts a collection of poems exploring gender, race, and violence in her new publication with HarperCollins Publishers, "A Cruelty Special to Our Species."

Emily confronts the histories of sexual violence against women, focusing in particular on Korean so-called "comfort women," women who are forced into sexual labor in Japanese-occupied territories during World War II.
