MA Funding

All MA applicants who indicate on the graduate application that they would like to be considered for financial support will be reviewed for scholarships; there are no separate forms to complete. Applicants who do not answer “yes” to the scholarship question are not considered for tuition scholarships. Whether an applicant indicates they wish to be considered for scholarships has no bearing upon consideration of their application.

All master’s students pay the remainder of tuition, fees, and their living expenses from their own resources and/or educational loans.

MA External Funding Policy

Tuition Scholarships:

Master’s students with UChicago scholarships in the form of tuition aid who win additional tuition scholarships will in most cases receive the full amount of both scholarships applied to their tuition balance.

When the total value of all tuition aid exceeds 100% of tuition charged for the year, the university will apply funding in the following order, up to the total cost of tuition for the academic year:

• external awards
• internal awards applied in the order they were awarded
• division/school scholarship funding.

When the terms of an award explicitly differ from this order, then the terms of the award will apply for that portion of the student’s funding.

Stipend Support:

Stipend funding, regardless of the source of funding, does not affect a student’s tuition aid.

Non-standard Funding Disbursement

Master's program tuition scholarships are generally disbursed in equal installments over Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters. Students who have special circumstances (military or international agency funding that can only be applied in certain quarters) can complete the Non-Standard Funding Request petition to have their tuition scholarship disbursed on a different schedule. Students should contact the Social Sciences Dean of Students office to discuss their situation and request a petition.
