With support from the CEAS Chinese Language Program Fund, the Chinese Language Program hosted a series of Weiqi sessions with Weiqi instructor, Xinming Guo, teaching three classes this quarter to interested University of Chicago students.  Guo remarked at the adeptness in which University of Chicago students grasped the basic concepts of the game.  As a result, he was able to go more in-depth with students by correlating the game rules and strategies as it related to the academic field of each student.  Students were able to reflect upon the connection between the game and the social reality as seen from their respective academic disciplines.  The three sessions hosted a total of over 10 students.

Weiqi, also known as "Go," is an abstract strategy board game for two players in which the aim is to surround more territoty than the opponent.  It is known to be the world's oldest board game with origins in East Asia with popularity in China, Korea, and Japan.

Xinming Guo is the Founder of Go and Math Academy, and was named the National Teacher of the Year by the American Go Foundation.
