The Chinese language lecturers and instructional professors in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations (EALC) recently recognized Elizabeth Coble, a fourth year in the College, for enrolling in a Chinese language class for her entire (12-quarter) tenure as an undergraduate at UChicago. Elizabeth took 1st-Year, 2nd-Year, 3rd-Year heritage sequences, and is currently taking a 4th-Year class taught by Li Meng, Instructional Professor in Chinese Language. She will graduate at the end of the academic year in 2022. Elizabeth is the recipient of an "I Love Studying Chinese/我爱学中文/我愛學中文" award from EALC, sponsored by the CEAS Chinese Language Program Fund.
Founded in 1936, the UChicago Chinese Language program offers training in modern Chinese language as well as in classical Chinese. The curriculum in modern Chinese includes courses from first year to fifth year Chinese, and includes content-based courses beyond the fifth-year. There is a separate track of courses for heritage learners up to the level of third year. In addition to courses during the regular academic year, an intensive summer program is provided at the University’s Beijing Center and in the University's main campus in Hyde Park.
