The Chinese language lecturers and instructional professors in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations (EALC) recently recognized Gillian Nielsen, a fourth year in the College, for completing four levels of Chinese sequence as an undergraduate at UChicago, having taken the first-year sequence in Chinese in summer 2020. Gillian, a computer science major, is currently finishing the 4th year sequence before graduating this summer. She will graduate at the end of the academic year in 2023. Gillian is the recipient of an "I Love Studying Chinese/我爱学中文/我愛學中文" award from EALC, sponsored by the CEAS Chinese Language Program Fund.
Founded in 1936, the UChicago Chinese Language program offers training in modern Chinese language as well as in classical Chinese. The curriculum in modern Chinese includes courses from first year to fifth year Chinese, and includes content-based courses beyond the fifth-year. There is a separate track of courses for heritage learners up to the level of third year. In addition to courses during the regular academic year, an intensive summer program is provided at the University’s Beijing Center and in the University's main campus in Hyde Park.
