The Waseda International House of Literature (WIHL) and the Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities is hosting its second meeting of the  WIHL/Yanai Initiative Research Reading Group on Saturday, June 18th at 9 AM (JST), where they will host special guest, Associate Professor of Japanese Literature, and East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Hoyt Long.  The meeting will feature a reading of his recent publication, The Values in Numbers: Reading Japanese Literature in a Global Information Age (Columbia University Press, 2021).

This virtual meeting will entail a discussion of The Values in Numbers, and its impact on current research trends in Japanese literary studies and digital humanities projects.  In the book, Professor Long proposes that scholars “take established and emergent practices in computer science, linguistics, and sociology and put them in dialogue with practices of knowledge making in literary study, both to qualify their ‘facts’ about literary language and textual meaning and to modify their practices for our own disciplinary ends.”

This reading group aims to bring together active researchers to read and discuss recently released monographs that are shaping the fields of Japanese studies, world literature, translation studies, and global cultural studies. Each meeting focuses on one text and features the author as a special guest. The organizers hope to select fifteen applicants from around the world to participate. All applications are welcome, with graduate students and early career faculty encouraged to apply. All participants will be provided with a paper or digital copy of the selected book free of charge in advance of the meeting.

Applications are open until 11:59 pm on Monday, May 16th with results released on Friday, May 20th.
