Excerpt of Judith Zeitlin and Yao Chen's New Opera "Ghost Village" on View

An excerpt from Yao Chen and Judith Zeitlin's new opera Ghost Village, adapted from a seventeenth-century Liaozhai tale, is now on view at the Logan Center Gallery as part of the ON DRAWING DRAWING ON: Ten Years of Fellowship at the Richard and Mary L. Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry” exhibit, taking place from January 28th to March 13th.  

The University of Chicago's Judith Zeitlin (William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor, East Asian Languages and Civilizations), and Beijin-based composer and University of Chicago alum Yao Chen collaboratively undertake the creation of an opera, with Yao composing the music, and Professor Zeitlin writing the libretto.  The opera is based on a ghost store that features in Pu Songling's (1640-1715) masterprice, Strange Tales from a Chinese Studies.

The exhibit, taking place at the Logan Center Gallery located at 915 E. 60th Street, has gallery hours from Tuesday-Saturday from 9:00 am-9:00 pm, and Sunday from 11:00 am-9:00 pm. The overall exhibition brings together artists and scholars to “draw” on each other’s minds, creating new genres of art and scholarship. Conceptually and formally, the works on view adopt the experimental nature of the program, exploring what is possible at the meeting point between the arts and academic life. Visitors to the exhibition will first encounter a reading room where they can listen to interviews from past Gray Center directors, read through issues of Portable Gray—the Gray Center’s magazine—and other publications, and browse additional contributions on the Logan Center Exhibitions website. Visitors are then welcomed into the main gallery where an expansive selection of artworks that represent a variety of approaches to drawing are presented. Occurring throughout the run of the exhibition are a series of special screenings in the Logan Center’s Performance Hall that feature film and moving image works.
